Beha'alotekha (When you set up)

Scripture:

Num. 8:1–12:16

Torah

Dedication of the Levites

Adonai spoke to Moses saying, “Speak to Aaron and say to him: When you erect the lamps, the seven lamps are to illuminate the area in front of the menorah.” Aaron did so. He erected the lamps facing forward so they illuminated the area in front of the menorah, just as Adonai had commanded Moses. Now this is how the menorah was made: hammered gold from its base to its blossoms. Just as was the pattern that Adonai had shown to Moses, so he made the menorah.

Again Adonai spoke to Moses saying, “Take the Levites from among Bnei-Yisraeland ceremonially cleanse them. This is what you must do to them to make them clean: Sprinkle the purifying water on them,[a] then have them shave their whole bodies and wash their clothes, thus purifying themselves.

“Then they are to take a young bull with its grain offering of fine flour mixed with oil, plus a second young bull for a sin offering. Bring the Levites before the Tent of Meeting, and gather the whole community of Bnei-Yisrael10 Bring the Levites before AdonaiBnei-Yisrael will lay their hands on the Levites, 11 and Aaron will present the Levites before Adonai as a wave offering from Bnei-Yisrael. Then they may go about the work of the service of Adonai.

Scripture:

 Zech. 2:14–4:7

Haftarah

14 “‘Sing and rejoice, O daughter of Zion! For behold, I am coming and I will live among you’[a]—it is a declaration of Adonai15 ‘In that day many nations will join themselves to Adonai and they will be My people and I will dwell among you.’ Then you will know that Adonai-Tzva’ot has sent me to you. 16 Adonai will inherit Judah as His portion in the holy land and will once again choose Jerusalem. 17 Be silent before Adonai, all flesh, for He has aroused Himself from His holy dwelling.”

Joshua the Kohen Gadol

3 Then he showed me Joshua the kohen gadol standing before the angel of Adonai and the satan[b], standing at his right hand to accuse him. [cAdonai said to the satan, ‘Adonai rebukes you, the satan. Indeed Adonai, who has chosen Jerusalem, rebukes you.[d] Is not this man a brand plucked out of the fire?’

Now Joshua was wearing filthy garments and standing before the angel who answered and spoke to those standing before him saying, ‘Remove the filthy garments from him.’ Then to Joshua he said, ‘See, I have removed your iniquity from you and will dress you with fine clothing.’[e]

Then I said, ‘Place a clean turban on his head.’

So they put a pure turban on his head and clothed him with garments while the angel of Adonai stood by.

On the Move through Samaria

11 Now while going up to Jerusalem, Yeshua was passing between Samaria and the Galilee. 12 As He entered a certain village, ten men with tzara’at came toward Him. They stood some distance away [a13 and raised their voices, saying, “Yeshua, Master, have mercy on us!”

14 When He saw them, He said to them, “Go and show yourselves to the kohanim.”[b] And as they went, they were cleansed. 15 Now one of them, when he saw that he was healed, came back, glorifying God with a loud voice. 16 And he fell at Yeshua’s feet, facedown, giving Him thanks. And he was a Samaritan.

17 Then Yeshua answered and said, “Weren’t ten cleansed? But where are the nine? 18 Weren’t any found who came back to give glory to God except this foreigner?” 19 Then Yeshua said to the man, “Stand up and go! Your faith has made you well.”

20 Now when Yeshua was asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come, He answered them and said, “The kingdom of God does not come with signs to be seen. 21 Nor will they say, ‘Look, here!’ or ‘There!’ For behold, the kingdom of God is in your midst.”

1 Corinthians 10 : 6 – 13

Now these things happened as examples for us, so we wouldn’t crave evil things, just as they did. [aDo not be idolaters, as some of them were. As it is written, “The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play.” [bAnd let’s not commit sexual immorality, as some of them did—and in one day 23,000 fell. [c]And let’s not test the Lord, as some of them did—and were destroyed by serpents. [d10 And let’s not grumble, as some of them did—and were destroyed by the destroying angel. [e11 Now these things happened to them as an example, and it was written down as a warning to us—on whom the ends of the ages have come. 12 Therefore let the one who thinks that he stands watch out that he doesn’t fall. 13 No temptation has taken hold of you except what is common to mankind. But God is faithful—He will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you can handle. But with the temptation He will also provide a way of escape, so you will be able to endure it.

Revelation 11 : 1 – 19

Two Witnesses

11 Then a measuring rod like a staff was given to me, saying, “Get up and measure the Temple of God and the altar, and count those worshiping in it. [aBut do not measure the court outside the Temple—leave it out, because it has been given to the nations, and they shall trample the holy city for forty-two months. [b]And I will grant authority to My two witnesses and they will prophesy for 1,260 days,[c] dressed in sackcloth.”

These are the two olive trees and the two menorot that are standing before the Lord of the earth. [dIf anyone wishes to harm them, fire comes out of their mouths and consumes their enemies. If anyone wants to harm them, he must be killed in this way. [eThese two have the power to shut the heavens, so that no rain may fall during the days of their prophesying.[f] And they have power over the waters to turn them into blood, and to strike the earth with every kind of plague as often as they wish.[g]

When they have finished their testimony, the beast that rises from the abyss will make war on them, and overcome them and kill them. [hAnd their corpses will lie in the open street[i] of the great city that figuratively is called Sodom and Egypt—where also their[j] Lord was crucified. Some from the peoples and tribes and tongues and nations will look at their corpses for three and a half days, not allowing them to be placed into a grave. [k10 Those who dwell on the earth will rejoice over them. They will celebrate and send gifts to one another, because these two prophets tormented those who dwell on the earth.

Va'etchanan (And I Pleaded) - וָאֶתְחַנַּן

Scripture:

 Deut. 3:23–7:11

Torah

Moses Pleads to Enter

23 “I pleaded with Adonai at that time, saying, 24 ‘O Lord Adonai, You have begun to show Your servant Your greatness and Your strong hand—for what god is there in heaven or on earth who can do deeds and mighty acts like Yours? 25 Please! Let me cross over and see the good land across the Jordan—that good hill country and the Lebanon.’

26 “But Adonai was angry with me because of you, so He would not listen to me. ‘Enough!’ Adonai said to me, ‘Do not speak to Me anymore about this matter. 27 Go up to the top of Pisgah, look around to the west and the north and the south and the east, and see with your eyes—for you will not cross over this Jordan. 28 But commission Joshua, and encourage and strengthen him, for he will cross over before this people, and he will enable them to inherit the land that you will see.’ 29 So we stayed in the valley opposite Beth-peor.

Bnei-Yisrael Must Listen and Obey

4 “Now, O Israel, listen to the statutes and ordinances that I am teaching you to do, so that you may live and go in and possess the land that Adonai the God of your fathers is giving you. You must not add to the word that I am commanding you or take away from it—in order to keep the mitzvot of Adonai your God that I am commanding you. Your eyes have seen what Adonai did at Baal Peor, for Adonaiyour God has destroyed from among you everyone who followed Baal Peor. But you who held tight to Adonai your God are alive today—all of you.

Scripture:

 Isa. 40:1–26

Haftarah

Comfort, Proclaim Good News

40 “Comfort, comfort My people,” says your God.
Speak kindly to the heart of Jerusalem and proclaim to her that her warfare has ended,
that her iniquity has been removed.
For she has received from Adonai’s hand double for all her sins.
A voice cries out in the wilderness, “Prepare the way of Adonai, Make straight in the desert a highway for our God.[a]

Every valley will be lifted up, every mountain and hill made low, the rough ground will be a plain and the rugged terrain smooth.
The glory of Adonai will be revealed, and all flesh will see it together.”
For the mouth of Adonai has spoken.

A voice is saying, “Cry out!”
So I said, “What shall I cry out?”
“All flesh is grass, and all its loveliness is like the flower of the field.
The grass withers, the flower fades.
For the breath of Adonai blows on it.
Surely the people are grass.
The grass withers, the flower fades.
But the word of our God stands forever.”[b]

Get yourself up on a high mountain,
you who bring good news to Zion!
Lift up your voice with strength, you who bring good news to Jerusalem!
Lift it up! Do not fear!
Say to the cities of Judah:  “Behold your God!”
10 Look, Adonai Elohim comes with might,
with His arm ruling for Him.
Behold, His reward is with Him, and His recompense before Him.[c]
11 Like a shepherd, He tends His flock.[d]
He gathers the lambs in His arms carries them in his bosom, and gently guides nursing ewes.

Luke 22 : 13 – 38

13 So they left and found just what Yeshua had told them, and they prepared the Passover.

The Seder in the Upper Room

14 When the hour came, Yeshua reclined at table, and the emissaries with Him. 15 And He said to them, “I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. 16 For I tell you, I will never eat it again until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.”

17 And when He had taken a cup and offered the bracha, He said, “Take this and share it among yourselves. 18 For I tell you that I will never drink of the fruit of the vine from now on, until the kingdom of God comes.”

19 And when He had taken matzah[a] and offered the bracha, He broke it and gave it to them, saying, “This is My body, given for you. Do this in memory of Me.” 20 In the same way, He took the cup after the meal, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood, which is poured out for you. [b21 But look, the hand of the one betraying Me is with Mine on the table. [c22 For indeed, the Son of Man is going as has been predetermined; but woe to that man by whom He is betrayed!”

23 So they began to discuss among themselves which of them it might be who would do this thing.

Matthew 23 : 31 – 39

31 So you testify against yourselves, that you are sons of those who murdered the prophets. 32 Fill up, then, the measure of your fathers! 33 O snakes, you brood of vipers! How will you escape the condemnation of Gehenna?

34 “Because of this, behold, I’m sending you prophets and wise men and Torahscholars. Some of them you will kill and execute at the stake, and some of them you will scourge in your synagogues and persecute from city to city. 35 And so, upon you shall come all the righteous blood shed on earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah son of Berechiah,[a] whom you murdered between the Temple and the altar. [b36 Amen, I tell you, all these things will come upon this generation.”

Holy Temple to Be Destroyed

37 “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem who kills the prophets and stones those sent to her! How often I longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing! 38 Look, your house is left to you desolate! [c39 For I tell you, you will never see Me again until you say, ‘Baruch ha-ba b’shem Adonai. Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!’”[d]

Mark 12 : 28 – 34

Love Ends the Argument

28 One of the Torah scholars came and heard them debating. Seeing that Yeshuahad answered them well, he asked Him, “Which commandment is first of all?”

29 Yeshua answered, “The first is, ‘Shema Yisrael, Adonai Eloheinu, Adonai echad. Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is One. 30 And you shall love Adonai your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ [a31 The second is this, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’[b]There is no other commandment greater than these.”

32 “Well said, Teacher,” the Torah scholar said to Him. “You have spoken the truth, that He is echad, and besides Him there is no other! [c33 And ‘to love Him with all the heart, with all the understanding, and with all the strength,’[d] and ‘to love the neighbor as oneself,’[e] is much more than all burnt offerings and sacrifices.”

34 When Yeshua saw that he had answered wisely, He said to him, “You are not far from the kingdom of God.” And no one dared any longer to question Him.
