Parhiyot

Parshiyot is the plural of Parashah.
From ancient times there has been a weekly portion (Parashah) from the first five books of Moses (The Torah) and an ending (Haftarah) from the Prophets read on the Sabbath in synagogues around the world.
This portion is given a Hebrew name drawn from the opening words of the Torah passage. An illustration of this practice appears to have been recorded in Luke 4:16 where Yeshua (Jesus) arrived in the synagogue in Nazareth and was asked to read the portion (Isaiah 61) from the Prophets.
We have found that in perusing these weekly readings, not only are we provided opportunity to identify in the context of God’s Word with millions of Jewish people around the world, but very often the Holy Spirit will illumine specific passages pertinent that week in our own personal lives and that of our Messianic, Nazerene, Christian congregations and hearing.

Do We Really Believe that God Chose Us and Gave Us the Torah?

In the blessing before the reading of the Torah, we say that God "chose us from all the peoples and gave us God's Torah." 
Do we as Christian / Messianic believers truly believe this?
If not, why do we say so in the blessing?

Most Christians and Messianic believers are in the understanding and believe that G_d's word is given to man by Him through the Ruach Ha'Kodesh (the Holy Spirit). We see Sinai as a symbol of our ongoing relationship between God and His people, both the chosen people of the Jewish race as those who are grafted into this by the means of the tree of the root of Jesse. We believe that the Torah is a work written by human beings who were inspired by God trough the Ruach to share the stories, history and laws that helped them understand God and God's will.
According to this view, the Torah is the product of centuries of Jews who discussed and created laws and legends that drew them closer to God and what it means to live as God wishes us to live. This process is still ongoing.
By reading and studying God's written word, and also hearing the Rhema word, we are still creating new understandings and interpretations of Torah, Haftarah, and the Brit Chadashah.

For our Jewish Brothers and Sisters, and for our understanding, the idea of the Jewish people being the "chosen" people of God does not suggest that the Jewish people are superior to other people or closer to Him.
Rather, "chosen" means that we have a unique relationship with God that we call a b'rit (a covenant, or agreement) and we live by doing God's mitzvot (commandments).

As those who are grafted into the tree of the root of Jesse, or with other words, those that are the followers of the Nazerene Yeshua (Jesus Christ) we are now part of that same family.
As G_d loves us in an equal way and does not make any further distinqtion in His household, we are to encourage one and another to keep to the same household rules.
We can and should be pleased that G_d does not adhere to the phrase StepChild as we are all equal in and dear in His eyes.
This is emphasized by the fact that He Gave His one and only begotten son, so that whom so ever believed in Him shall not perish but have everlasting life. (John 3:16).

Torah is God's gift to His people and it is the foundation of our unique relationship with God.
In saying this, we are not saying that we are superior to others. Rather, we celebrate the text that is at the heart of our relationship with God.
This is how we understand the words of the Torah blessing.
